What you normally need

The official Canada eTA application normally requires a valid eligible passport, an email address and an accepted payment method. The Government of Canada currently lists an official, non-refundable fee of CAD $7.

The online government form cannot be saved for later, so gathering the information first can reduce rushed mistakes.

  • Passport biographical page
  • A working email address you can check
  • Travel and personal background information requested by the form
  • An accepted credit, debit or prepaid card

Match the passport exactly

Enter names, passport number, nationality, issue date and expiry date exactly as they appear on the passport. Confusing the letter O with zero, or the letter I with one, can link the authorization to incorrect details.

If a new passport is issued after approval, the existing eTA does not move to the new passport. A new application may be required before flying.

Use an email address you control

Application updates and requests for additional information are normally sent by email. Check spam and junk folders, and be cautious with messages that request payment or personal data through unfamiliar links.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need confirmed flights before applying?

The official guidance focuses on having the passport, email address and payment method ready. Check the current government form for the exact information requested in your situation.

Can a family use one eTA?

No. Each eligible traveler, including children, needs an individual authorization linked to their own passport.
